London Marathon - Chris Durham

London Marathon - Chris Durham

Hello, first of all let me introduce myself – I am Chris and on the 22nd April 2018, will be trying to run the London Marathon.  This will be the first time I have ever attempted such a feat and I am currently busy training for the big day.

Our love for cats all started some 17 years ago when one Saturday morning, we saw 2 kittens playing in our neighbour’s garden. On the Monday evening, one of the kittens decided to run into our house and seemed determined to adopt us as her new owner.

Calls around our neighbours shed no clues as to who she belonged to, so once we decided to look after her until her rightful home could be found.

A call to Cats Protection then revealed that her sister had been taken there and we were asked if we would like to adopt her, and so Charlie and Eddie  became part of the family.

Attending the Family Fun Day last year made us realise the amazing work that is done by Cats Protection in looking after our feline friends who are not as fortunate as Charlie and Eddie; and so I wanted to do something to help raise money for this great cause.

However, following receiving my ‘rejection’ pack from the London Marathon, I thought that my chances to compete in this event had gone for another year. I had also been informed by Cats Protection that all of their Golden Bond places had gone and so braced myself to once again, watching it on the television.

In January, I received an e-mail from Cats Protection to say that a place had become available. I responded stating my interest, but thinking it would have been sent to a large number of people; didn’t expect a positive response.

Two days later, I received the response – “if you are willing and able we would love for you to be part of our 2018 London Marathon team.” It is now exactly 3 months to go until the big day and time to start training….

Following this news, the last month has been somewhat of a whirlwind and trying to organise everything in my life so that I can incorporate a training plan. Whilst I have completed a number of half marathons in the past, the longest distance I had run in the last 3 months was 7 miles – only 19 miles short of marathon distance!!!

At the ‘love your cat’ Valentine event, we met all the cats currently being cared for. One of the Cats that was particularly interested in talking to us was Bob.

I was delighted when I saw that Bob is going to be my virtual running mate on my adventure. Hopefully, though he will find his forever home before the big day.

Fast forward to today, and I have increased the length of my training runs to 14 miles. As well as the London Marathon, I had also booked last year to run the ‘Big Half’ half marathon on 4th March 2018.

I will be wearing my Cats Protection running vest on the day, and have got it personalised so that any feline-friendly supporters know where to text any donations.

I also have a JustGiving fundraising page, which gives more details of my story.

I will keep you posted of my progress and how I get on at the half marathon. Hopefully, it will be a little warmer than what has been forecast!!!!
